BUYER’S GUIDE
WHAT IS A GOOD GAMING KEYBOARD?
A gaming keyboard is actually nothing more than a regular keyboard with extra functionalities that come in handy when gaming. Because in principle you can of course game on any keyboard, but if you are a fanatic gamer, a specific keyboard certainly makes a difference. There are several topics that you can recognize in a good gaming keyboard: the type and quality of the keys, the ergonomics and of course the many extra features. The sum of these elements makes for a good gaming keyboard, although of course there are always personal preferences depending on the gamer. And of course all extra features come with a price tag. That is why it is important to first think carefully about what your expectations are and then compare the game keyboard. Below we further explain what you should pay attention to.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A GAMING KEYBOARD?
Buying a gaming keyboard is an important part of upgrading your game set-up. And a good keyboard also lasts a long time. It is therefore important to think carefully about which elements are important before making a decision. Below we will discuss what you should pay attention to when buying a gaming keyboard.
KEYBOARD TYPE: MECHANICAL VS MEMBRANE
Perhaps the most important part of a gaming keyboard: the keys. The biggest difference is between the types of keys: membrane or mechanical. Mechanical keys react a lot faster than membrane keys and are therefore much more popular with avid gamers. Because keystrokes require less force, you can make combinations faster and easier. However, the keys are a lot noisier than membrane keys and it is easier to make typos. That is why there are now more and more semi-mechanical keyboards on the market that combine the advantages of both techniques. Nevertheless, we advise avid gamers to go for the mechanical keys, because this is simply the best game. In addition, mechanical keys wear a lot slower than membrane keys, which means your keyboard will last a lot longer.
Type Switches
Mechanical keys also differ from each other. This is due to the different switches that are on the market. The switches are located under the key and register the keystroke. Cherry MX is the best-known brand among switches and is also most often encountered in gaming keyboards. There are also other brands in the market that produce switches such as Gateron, Gailh and Razer. Each brand and type of switch has its own characteristics and it can therefore pay to try out different types.
The switches differ from each other in terms of sound of the key, response time and force it takes to press the key. Because there are too many switches on the market to give a complete overview here, our advice is to find more information about the switches that are in your intended game keyboard. Then you can assess for yourself whether these fit your preferences. In addition, you can easily switch keys within the same brand because you can simply click the top of the key on the bottom.
WIRELESS OR WIRED KEYBOARD
A wireless or wired keyboard? In the past, the choice was easy and every gamer chose a wired keyboard. The wireless game keyboards were simply not fast and good enough and caused a delay in registering your keystrokes. An absolute sin for the avid gamer.
However, the current generation of wireless game keyboards is getting better and better and no longer has any delay compared to wired keyboards. And that is of course very interesting, because a desk under wiring is of course a lot better. The prices of the real quality wireless gaming keyboards are still on the high side, so you have to wonder if you are willing to pay for it. But developments are fast, and we are sure that good wireless keyboards will soon become more affordable.
FULL SIZE OR TENKEYLESS KEYBOARD
Gaming keyboards are known to be quite bulky and large. Some gamers are therefore specifically looking for a compact or mini game keyboard. Especially when you often go to LAN parties or tournaments, it is useful if you can easily take your keyboard with you. A Tenkeyless (TKL) keyboard can be a godsend. The numpad has been removed, which makes the keyboard a lot more compact.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES OF GAMING KEYBOARDS
After the above choices, we come to the last, but perhaps most important part: the extra features. Because let’s face it: that’s where a real gaming keyboard differs from normal keyboards. These are the most common features that make your keyboard complete.
Anti-Ghosting
Most mechanical keyboards feature Anti-Ghosting. Anti-Ghosting ensures that you can press up to 6 keys simultaneously and they are properly registered. This is especially useful for longer combinations while gaming. With gaming keyboards without Anti-Ghosting, you will often miss a combination. In our opinion, this is therefore also a must-have for the avid gamer.
Customizable KEYS
We’ve talked about the different types of keys and switches before, but now there are also keyboards on the market that offer something extra: the personalization of each key. These are so-called Omnipoint Switches with which you can set the sensitivity and registration time per key. This way you can set the sensitivity of buttons that you do not need very high so that you do not accidentally enter the wrong combination. Maybe not a must-have, but very handy!
Game profiles
Most keyboards allow you to save different game profiles. You can set this via the supplied software. You then create profiles that you can use with your various games. You can activate specific macros, key settings and of course RGB lighting.
CABLE MANAGEMENT
Have you opted for a wired keyboard? Then it is nice if you can neatly hide it. Many gaming keyboards have handy slots where you can hide your cables. This way you keep your gaming desk clean.
MACRO KEYS
Some keyboards offer macro keys. You can assign specific commands for these keys, so that you can perform certain actions quickly in games or, for example, easily operate your multimedia. These kinds of buttons are also useful for people who write and edit a lot of content: you can easily set macros to cut / paste or save a document.
Media KEYS
With these buttons you can easily control music or videos on your computer. This way you can easily skip to the next song or change the volume without leaving the game.
WRIST SUPPORT
Gaming comfort is very important and that’s why this is one of our favorite features: the wrist rest. Most game keyboards provide a wrist rest that provides extra support. Especially during long sessions, this is very nice and ensures less fatigue and complaints. Most wrist rests are easy to detach and attach so that you can easily change even during your sessions.
RGB LIGHTING
In our opinion, this feature should be on every gaming keyboard. The RGB lighting. Of course the quality of the keyboard is extremely important, but the eye is also important. However? RGB lighting gives a radiance to your gaming keyboard and your entire gaming set-up. You can set the lighting in 16.1 million colors and often adjust it per key. There are also keyboards on the market that have 4 lighting zones at the bottom of the keyboard for even more effect. And although the lighting is of course above all beautiful, it is also practical. This way, you don’t have to turn on the main light during late gaming sessions to see your keys properly.
USB PORTS
Most gaming keyboards connect via USB. This means that they occupy a USB port of your computer. Some keyboards therefore have 1 or more USB ports so that you can connect other devices to them. Useful!
WATER RESISTANCE
When you spend a lot of money on a good gaming keyboard, you don’t want it to break quickly. Our first advice is to handle it carefully, but an accident can happen. You can always knock over your glass and then of course you don’t want your keyboard to be broken right away. That’s why there are water-resistant keyboards on the market that can withstand these kinds of accidents.
WHAT TYPES OF GAMING KEYBOARDS ARE THERE?
There are many different game keyboards on the market. We have listed the most important types below. A keyboard is often a combination of the types below. For example, you can have a wireless mechanical tenkeyless keyboard, or a wired membrane keyboard. With the explanation below you will know what that means.
MEMBRANE KEYBOARD
Many regular keyboards are membrane keyboards. The keys lie on a piece of plastic membrane and do not have separate switches. They are less sensitive and accurate and therefore less suitable for avid gamers or people who type a lot. Membrane keyboards are often cheaper and make less noise than mechanical game keyboards.
MECHANICAL KEYBOARD
With a mechanical keyboard, each key has a separate switch. This allows for a faster and more accurate transfer compared to membrane keys. Gamers can therefore react faster in games and you can achieve higher type speeds. This type of keys also lasts a lot longer than membrane keys. They are a lot noisier than membrane keys, although some people like the sound.
Tenkeyless KEYBOArd
The number pad is missing on a tenkeyless (TKL) keyboard. This makes the keyboard much more compact than full keyboards. Handy if you have little space on your gaming desk or if you want to take your keyboard with you often. These types of keyboards are less suitable for people who type a lot and use the number pad.
75/65/60% KEYBOARDS
Do you want an even more compact keyboard? Then there are the 75/65/60% keyboards that are even more compact than TKL keyboards. Often other parts such as navigation, arrow or function keys are missing on these keyboards.
WIRED KEYBOARD
You connect these keyboards to your PC with a cable. In the past, this was actually the only choice for avid gamers because wireless keyboards caused too much delay in the transfer. This gap is quickly made up with the latest techniques. More luxurious gaming keyboards often have slots in the bottom to neatly hide the wiring.
WIRELESS KEYBOARD
As mentioned above, this type of keyboard used to be little popular with avid gamers. But that is starting to change. New technologies ensure that the transfer is just as fast as with wired gaming keyboards. And then the lack of a wire is of course very nice. No hassle if you want to take your keyboard with you and of course a much cleaner gaming desk!
WHAT ARE KNOWN GAMing KEYBOARDS BRANDS?
There are of course many brands on the market, but there are a few better-known brands that have been making quality gaming keyboards for years. These are:

ARE MEMBRANE GAMING KEYBOARDS SUITABLE FOR GAMING?
You can game on any keyboard and of course this also depends on your budget. Membrane gaming keyboards are a lot cheaper than mechanical variants. But we have to be honest: the quality is a lot less.
We therefore do not recommend avid gamers to play on a membrane keyboard. Why? The key transfer is a lot less sensitive and fast, so you will lose it in games against players who do have a mechanical keyboard. You simply make a lot more mistakes due to missed key combinations and your reaction speed is also lower.
A membrane keyboard also wears out a lot faster, which makes investing in a mechanical keyboard just as expensive in the long term. We therefore recommend using a mechanical gaming keyboard for both gaming pleasure and durability.
